iPhone 14 Pro Max Teardown Gives a Closer Look at the Unused SIM Tray Area on US and Other Models

Repair website iFixit today shared an in-depth disassembly of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, providing a closer look at the device’s internals. Notably, the disassembly includes a photo of the plastic spacer that replaces the SIM card tray on the US model.

The four iPhone 14 models sold in the US no longer have a physical SIM card tray and rely entirely on a digital eSIM. The breakthrough confirms that Apple is not using the internal space freed up by removing the tray for other components or additional functionality, and instead filling in the gaps with a square piece of plastic. Outside of the US, all iPhone 14 models still come with a SIM card tray in this space.

As seen in the previous teardown, iFixit provides a close-up of the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s logic board, which is equipped with the faster A16 Bionic chip and the Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 modem that provides 5G and satellite connectivity.

While the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus can be opened from the back side, and feature a more repairable design with a removable display and glass back panel, this design change does not apply to the Pro model. The teardown shows that the iPhone 14 Pro Max keeps opening from the front and doesn’t have a removable glass back. The internal design of the device is largely unchanged from the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The lack of a removable glass back on the iPhone 14 Pro models makes repairs more expensive. Without AppleCare+, Apple Stores charge $499 to $549 to repair a cracked back glass on iPhone 14 Pro models, compared to $169 to $199 for standard iPhone 14 models.
