Five Apple Products You Should Avoid Buying Now

Rumors suggest that Apple still has some new devices coming before the end of the year, including various Macs and iPads. It looks like we won’t be getting the October event in 2022, but a refresh is coming soon, possibly via a press release. If you’re planning to buy a Mac or iPad, be sure to check out our list to find out what’s safe to pick up now and what’s not.

The iPad Pro was last updated in April 2021, and we expect an updated version before the end of 2022. There aren’t any major design changes we know of to come, but there are some features worth waiting for.

Both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models will get a refresh, but rumors suggest only the 12.9-inch model will have a mini-LED display, although there is some information indicating Apple could bring the technology to both models.

Apple’s updated iPad‌ Pro is expected to use the M2 chip that was first introduced in the new MacBook Air in June, bringing speed and performance improvements. There have also been rumors of wireless charging support, with Apple possibly adding a new, larger glass Apple logo on the back that allows MagSafe charging.

Reverse wireless charging is also possible with the new iPad Pro‌ models that can charge iPhones, AirPods, and other devices.

Apple has long offered the low-cost basic iPad‌ available for ~$300, but this year, the budget iPad is getting some trickle down features that were previously limited to high-end iPads.

Apple will be refreshing the old design that cheap iPad‌ has used for years, introducing a 10.5-inch display with a more modern look featuring flat edges and rounded corners. We’ve previously seen this design used for the iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro‌.

Flat-edged designs usually accompany bezel-free interfaces, but current rumors suggest that the iPad‌ will continue to have top and bottom bezels along with the Touch ID Home button, but it remains to be seen if that’s true. Apple may choose the same power button as the Touch ID‌ design used for the iPad mini‌ and iPad Air‌.

With the exception of the cheap iPad‌, every iPad‌ uses a USB-C port, and Apple will swap Lightning for USB-C with the 10th generation iPad‌ update.

We can also see some improvements to the camera, and a faster chip is a sure thing (likely the A14), but one thing the iPad‌ might be missing is a headphone jack. Removing the headphone jack would put the cheap iPad‌ in line with the rest of the iPad lineup.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro came out in October last year, and we may see new M2‌ Pro and M2‌ Max models released before the end of the year. The new MacBook Pro models are said to be planned for release as soon as this fall, but it’s possible the timing could be delayed due to supply constraints Apple is facing.

There hasn’t been a Mac mini refresh since 2020 when the M1 chip was added, but Apple has no plans to discontinue the desktop machine. Refreshments are underway, and updated Mac mini‌ devices may include M2‌ and M2‌ Pro chips.

We don’t expect any design changes, and high-end chips will likely be reserved for Mac Studio, which is like a hybrid of the Mac Pro and Mac mini‌.

Apple TV

Apple last updated the Apple TV in April 2021, and it might be time to refresh. Rumors suggest that there is a new model with an A14 chip and 4GB RAM in development, and it may be ready to launch before the end of 2022.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said several times this year that Apple plans to lower the price of the ‘Apple TV’ when it refreshes, but whether that will actually happen remains to be seen.

Since the Mac Pro‌ hasn’t been updated since 2019 and hasn’t used Apple’s silicon chips, it’s clear that now isn’t the time to buy. While we did hear some early 2022 rumors suggesting that the Mac Pro‌ could get a refresh before the end of the year, it now looks like the new Mac Pro‌ won’t be coming until 2023.

While we may have a few months before the Mac Pro‌ sees an update, we don’t recommend buying it now. You’ll want to wait for Apple to bring Apple’s ultra-fast silicon chips to high-end pro machines.

Rumors suggest that the Mac Pro‌ will use the M2‌ Ultra, an upgrade to the M1 Ultra first introduced in Mac Studio‌, and an even more powerful Extreme M2‌ chip. The M1 Ultra‌ features up to a 20-core CPU and 64-core GPU, and the M2‌ Ultra can be even more powerful.

The M2‌ Extreme will be Apple’s most powerful chip to date, and BloombergMark Gurman says that the chip can have more than 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores.

Note that this list is based on the rumors we’ve heard, so it’s possible that some of these updates could be delayed until 2023. The timing of Apple product releases isn’t always straightforward, but if you can wait to buy, it’s a good idea to hold off until new product announcements if you’re concerned about have the latest and greatest devices.
