Apple Explains New iPhone Alert Shows When Fake AirPods Connect

Starting with iOS 16, users may see a “Unable to Verify AirPods” warning on their iPhone if they try to connect fake AirPods to the device. Apple shared more information about these warnings today in a new support document discovered by developers Steve Moser.

Support documents indicate that unverified AirPods can still be connected to iPhones, but may not work as expected.

Apple’s warning displays a prominent “Don’t Connect” button, but users can tap the smaller “Connect in Bluetooth Settings” link to continue connecting unverified AirPods if they wish. Twitter user “Tommy Boi” share video alert that came into action a few days ago after connecting fake AirPods to their iPhone (NSFW warning: video background music contains profanity and viewer discretion is advised).

The warning was first discovered in the code for iOS 16 Release Candidate last week.
